The design lessons hidden in your everyday routines
By Tracy Laqua, Interior Design Professional
Your Home Is Talking. Are You Listening?
Every summer, our homes tell us a story.
Not through words, but through the way we naturally live.
Without realizing it, we begin creating new routines. We entertain friends on the patio, enjoy quiet mornings with a cup of coffee, welcome grandchildren for sleepovers, host backyard barbecues, and spend longer evenings together as a family.
Along the way, something interesting happens.
We stop using our homes the way we thought we would and start using them the way that feels most natural.
As an Interior Design Professional, this is one of the first things I look for when I visit a client's home.
Not the paint colour. Not the furniture. Not even the finishes. I watch how people live. Because that's where the real story begins.

The Best Design Clues Aren't Found in a Showroom
People often assume good design starts with selecting new furniture, choosing flooring, or deciding on paint colours.
In my experience, those decisions come much later.
The best design clues come from everyday life.
Ask yourself:
- Where does everyone naturally gather?
- Which room rarely gets used?
- Is there a chair that everyone gravitates toward?
- Does conversation always happen in the kitchen?
- Are people standing because there isn't enough comfortable seating?
Those moments aren't accidents.
They're telling you how your home supports—or doesn't support—the way you live.
Once you begin noticing those patterns, it becomes much easier to make confident design decisions.
Sometimes the Best Improvement Isn't a Renovation
One of the biggest misconceptions about interior design is that every improvement requires a renovation.
It doesn't.
I've worked with homeowners who transformed a room simply by changing the furniture layout. Turning a sofa to encourage conversation. Moving a favourite chair beside a window. Removing one oversized piece that interrupted the natural flow through the room. None of those changes required a contractor. But they completely changed how the room felt.
That's because great design isn't measured by how much you spend. It's measured by how well your home supports your everyday life.

Summer Is One of the Best Times to Learn About Your Home
Summer naturally puts our homes to the test.
Outdoor living becomes more important. Guests visit more often. Children are home. Schedules become more relaxed. Because our routines change, we notice things we might overlook during the rest of the year.
Maybe you wished your patio had more shade. Maybe everyone gathered around the kitchen island while the dining room remained empty. Maybe your entryway became cluttered with sandals, beach towels, backpacks, and sports equipment.
Those aren't frustrations. They're feedback. Your home has been showing you where small improvements could make everyday life easier.

Before You Start Your Next Project...
Before choosing paint colours or shopping for furniture, spend a little time observing.
Walk through your home with fresh eyes.
Ask yourself:
- Which spaces make us want to stay?
- Which spaces do we naturally avoid?
- Where do conversations happen?
- What interrupts the flow of everyday life?
- If I could improve one thing before next summer, what would it be?
Write your observations down. You don't need to solve everything immediately. But those notes will become incredibly valuable when you're ready to make changes.

Design Around Life—Not the Other Way Around
One of the philosophies that guides every project at in-ex-teriors™ is simple:
A home should support the life you actually live—not the life you imagine in a magazine.
When your home reflects your routines, priorities, and the way your family naturally connects, it becomes more than beautiful.
It becomes comfortable. It becomes functional. It becomes welcoming. And perhaps most importantly…It begins to feel like it was designed just for you.
