Respecting the Past While Adding What Was Needed

This 1860s farmhouse has been in the same family for generations, so adding to it required a thoughtful approach. The homeowners wanted a three-season sunroom that could serve as their main entrance, provide much-needed storage and give them a comfortable place to enjoy the views and sunsets surrounding their property.

Creating something new didn't mean everything old had to go. Whenever it makes sense for the design, I look for opportunities to work with what is already there. For this project, barn board from one of the property's old barns was incorporated into the new space, adding character and a meaningful connection to the home's history.

During the renovation, removing the old siding also revealed beautiful original brick underneath. Rather than cover it back up, the homeowner painstakingly removed the old plaster to expose the brick so it could become part of the finished space.

These weren't simply decorative choices. They allowed pieces of the property's history to become part of its next chapter while still giving the homeowners the function and look they wanted from their new addition.
