Making the Most of an Unusual Layout
This Waterdown home had a distinctive backsplit layout. Visitors entered on the upper level, while the kitchen, dining room, family room, home office and additional bathroom were located downstairs, with a walkout to the backyard and swimming pool.
Rather than undertake a complete renovation, the homeowners wanted to refresh and update the spaces throughout their home, improving comfort, functionality and appearance while making good use of what they already had.
On the upper level, we renovated the primary ensuite and refreshed the primary bedroom with a new colour scheme and a rearrangement of the existing furniture. We also reorganized the laundry closet to make better use of the available space and installed new carpeting in the hallway and on the stairs leading to the lower level.
Thoughtful Updates Throughout the Home
In the kitchen and dining area, new heated tile plank flooring brought added comfort and a fresh, cohesive look. Rather than replacing the existing kitchen cabinetry, we painted it and installed new countertops and a backsplash, giving the kitchen a significant update without the cost and disruption of a full-scale renovation.
The adjoining dining room featured a striking pitched glass roof with exposed wood beams. Painting the beams helped brighten the space while preserving its distinctive architectural character.
In the sunken family room, we updated the existing gas fireplace with textured tile, installed new carpeting and selected new furnishings to create a comfortable, welcoming space.
The home office also received a fresh paint colour, bringing it into the overall transformation.
The result is a refreshed home that feels more cohesive, comfortable and functional across its different levels, demonstrating how thoughtful improvements can make a meaningful difference without replacing everything.
